Everyone Wants to Be an Influencer. Nobody Wants to Be Interesting.
India's creator fever taught a generation to package themselves. Somewhere along the way, curiosity got demoted.
Influencer used to be a job. Then it became a personality template.
In India, you can feel it in college fests, cafe corners, and even family functions where someone is shooting B-roll of the paneer like it is a brand film. The dream is not always fame. Sometimes it is just proof: I exist in high resolution.
The joke writes itself. Everybody wants the aesthetics of influence. Fewer people want the inconvenience of being actually interesting.
Interesting requires boredom. Influence requires packaging.
Being interesting means reading past the caption. Staying with a weird hobby. Having a take that is not already trending. Risking a conversation that cannot be clipped.
Influence, as currently practiced, often means packaging. Hooks. Templates. "Value." A face that knows its angles. A life arranged for watch time.
Those are not the same skill. One produces people. The other produces content about people.
The personal brand ate the person
Young India was told to build a personal brand before they finished building a personality. LinkedIn sincerity leaked into Instagram. Instagram aesthetics leaked into friendships. Friendships started sounding like collaborations.
If you have ever watched someone turn a private joke into a carousel, you have seen the mutation. Intimacy becomes inventory.
This is why Gen Z soft-quits Instagram without always deleting it. The fatigue is not only algorithmic. It is existential. Performing yourself is unpaid overtime.
Curiosity got demoted
Ask what someone is into and you might get a niche. Ask what they post and you will get a strategy.
Interest-based connection tries to reverse that hierarchy. Talk about the thing first. Let identity arrive later, if at all. That is not anti-ambition. It is anti-costume-as-default.
Finding your tribe should not require a media kit.
Sarcasm is the coping mechanism
Of course people joke about influencers. The industry overpromised meaning and underdelivered sleep. It turned hobbies into funnels. It made sincerity look naive and irony look smart, until irony also became a brand voice.
Still, the hunger underneath is sincere. People want to be seen. They want their taste to matter. They want a room that laughs at the same obscure reference. Influence was a distorted answer to a real need.
A quieter flex: depth
The next status symbol might be boring in the best way: knowing something. Caring about something. Staying with it when it is not posting well.
Anonymous interest rooms are useful here because they remove the face card from the entry fee. You can be early, weird, unfinished — without your unfinishedness becoming content strategy.
That is the cultural lane interested is aiming at: anonymously interesting, youth-first, Interest Rooms and private chat, invite-only on 15 August 2026. Not "become a creator." Become a person with interests again.
Everyone wants to be an influencer because influence looks like proof of life. Being interesting is harder. It does not always trend. It just makes the room better when you walk in — even if nobody knows your name.
